Cross Code 3 day camp (Lasertag Hardware)

Love Jesus, Love Code

Mid-Week (Mon-Wed or Wed-Fri)

Creating your own laser tag gun is a great way to learn about computer hardware, sensors, and how components work in a computer system. In this camp, you will have the chance to create your very own laser tag gun. The instructions are found on the crosscode website (except for some of the later software instructions that are yet to be written). Both primary and Secondary students can attend sessions 1-3. After that secondary students can continue onto sessions 4-7 while primary students can run their own self instructed activities. Primary groups may also substitute sessions 4-7 with coding lessons specific to their age, but cannot be run at the same time as the High School sessions.

Teachers will be required to attend the camp with their students and assist with the lessons.

At Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, there will be a brief 5 minute talk where coding concepts will be used to explain different parts of the Bible. These talks are found at the bottom of every tutorial on the website.

Session 1:

Learn about the different components of the Lasertag gun and get your battery circut working and your battery charging.

Session 2:

Adding components to the gun, wiring up the components to the nodeMCU board, programming the sound chip. In this session we hope to be able to program some of the guns for the night session. Students who finish will be able to assist others to ensure we have enough working guns.

Session 3:

Students learn how to add new programs onto their guns. Students who did not get their guns complete, will have a chance to complete them in this session.

Session 4:

High School students will continue to learn how to program the LED light strip, learn about the web interface and the protocols used in the guns.

7-10 Computing Technology outcomes: CT5-DAT-01, CT5-DAT-02

Session 5:

High School students will learn how to program the file system, display and sounds.

7-10 Computing Technology outcomes: CT5-DAT-01, CT5-DAT-02, CT5-DES-01

Session 6:

High School students will learn how to program the shoot and reload buttons, the IR send and receive signal.

7-10 Computing Technology outcomes: CT5-DAT-01, CT5-DAT-02

Session 7:

High School students will learn about the clone signal and how to change programs on all guns at once, and learn about different game modes.

7-10 Computing Technology outcomes: CT5-DAT-02

Prices are for Adults and Children. Prices include all meals and accommodation. Sessions 1-3 and Sessions 1-7 include materials needed to make the laser tag guns. Teachers and parents can make their own guns, except if they are “support only”. Primary students (3-6) can do sessions 1-3 with assistance from parents (ratio 1:4), High School students need a supervising teacher or parent (ratio 1:25). A minimum of 20 people needed to run the camp. A camp can be run for a mix of High School and Primary School as long as there are at least 10 students who participate in sessions 4-7.

BYO Device requirements and device hire

For sessions 3-7 you will need a PC or Mac that can run Aurdino IDE.

https://support.arduino.cc/hc/en-us/articles/360019833020-Download-and-install-Arduino-IDE

You can hire a laptop for $15 a session or $45 for the entire camp. This should be pre-booked so we have time to update software to the latest versions.

School Outcomes

The Computing Technology 7-10 Syllabus is due to be implemented from 2024. Much of what is covered in this camp will give students a good foundation as they develop their own projects for the subject. This camp lends them to the following types of projects:

  • Home automation with interaction with devices that use Infrared: air conditioners, TVs, etc.
  • Development of game objects that can be used in a lasertag game:
    • Scoreboard
    • powerup beacons
    • grenades
    • capture the flag – LED flag.
    • Improved display layout
    • Different Game Modes
