Ephesians 2:1–5 (HCSB)
2 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins 2 in which you previously walked according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler who exercises authority over the lower heavens, the spirit now working in the disobedient. 3 We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath as the others were also. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love that He had for us, 5 made us alive with the Messiah even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace!
Things can exist, and still be dead. All the components of the gun can be put together, but still remain dead. We need the power source to make it alive.
We can exist, and seem to be alive, we can breathe, and run, but still be spiritually dead. It is a problem that we are spiritually dead. And there is nothing we can do in and of ourselves to fix this.
Many times people have found an unexplainable desire to do what God wants. This desire has not come from within themselves, but from God. It is God who makes people aware of their sin, and it is God who changes their desire to follow him. God gives the power to make someone who is spiritually dead, come spiritually alive.
But God still uses people to bring people from being spiritually dead to spiritually alive. And he uses people as they tell people about Jesus.
God is like the battery, that brings us to life. And when people tell others about Jesus, and they respond, these messengers are like the wires, that help make the connection.
Christians want to help others come into connection with God, and yet they have no power on our own, but can only tell people about this great power that can bring people from death to life. It is God who provides the transforming power that changes someone from being spiritually dead to spiritually alive.
